SAICM
The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a global voluntary policy framework to support the goal established by the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002. SAICM's overall objective is the achievement of the sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle and chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health.
SAICM is distinguished by its comprehensive scope: multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral communication, endorsement at the highest political levels, emphasis on chemical safety as a sustainable issue, provision for resource mobilization, and formal endorsement or recognition by the governing bodies of key intergovernmental organizations.
As the mandate of SAICM ended in 2020 and the goal of a sustainable chemicals management has not been achieved, the parties have agreed on developing a follow up process: SAICM Beyond 2020.
